		<description>The following works well for using mplayer with mythfrontend for me:

ivtvfbctl /dev/fb0 -alpha 0; mplayer -vo ivtv ; ivtvfbctl /dev/fb0 -alpha 255

This temporarily makes the fb (which is where X is, and is overlayed on the tv out) invisible while mplayer plays directly to the ivtv driver.

Of course, this requires you compile mplayer with the ivtv patch.

I use that for both dvd and video playback, although today, my audio started falling 2 seconds behind the video *sigh*

BTW those pulsing/scanning lines sound a lot like phase problems, where the decoder box isn't putting out signal in the correct timings.  that would cause strange patterns to scan across the screen, at regular speeds.</description>
